BRADFORD V GRIMSBY U16

BRADFORD 6 GRIMSBY 1

You could tell before the puck was dropped the team was up for it today. Was it all the pre match warnings about proper conduct on the ice or the disparaging remarks from one of our parents about our last game narrow loss? Whatever it was the team were wound up and ready to rumble.

Face off, puck dropped, back to Butler, across to Nelson onto Marrow, back of the net. 18 seconds in: 1-0 Bradford lead.
5 minutes in and “Chav Boy” Armitage in his 4-man tent (XXL shirt) picked up Bradford’s first penalty for interference. Bradford dug in and Grimsby were unable to capitalise on it.
6 ½ mins in and Grimsby collect their first penalty of the game for cross checking. After 30 seconds Bradford were on the power play and within another 30 seconds a good pass from defence man Fruin saw Mr Marrow skate the right wing, turn in and shoot. Bradford’s number 2 goal.
A minute later saw Mr Nelson collect 2 minutes for elbows and Bradford were defending 5 on 4. Good defence work and an excellent display of goal keeping managed to keep the score at 2-0 to Bradford. Before Willis had completed his penalty Chav boy had managed to collect his second penalty, this time for elbows, Bradford were defending 5 on 3 and managed to keep Grimsby out. The first period ended Bradford 2 Grimsby Nil.
A quick 5-minute break and period 2 was away. 2 ½ minutes in saw the flying tent get pulled for elbows again, was the ref just suffering from flashbacks? Not only were Bradford able to hold on but our own “pocket rocket” Laville robbed the puck in our own zone got forced out to the rightwing and beat the Grimsby goalie with a superb bottle shot from a very acute angle. Bradford were leading 3-0.
23 minutes into the game saw Mr Muff pulled for the refs favourite, elbows. Within another minute Butler defending a Grimsby attack got pulled for interference and Bradford were 5 on 3 again for at least a minute.
Bradford held with a crucial stick poke and deft use of the feet from defender Flanagan, to speak nothing of the antics of our pet mutt Matt in goal.
Grimsby didn’t collect any penalties during the second period and although Bradford collected three we were still able to play 3 lines and witness some exciting hard play from centre man Joe Hellings, watch out for Joe in the next few games.
Sam made a couple of good breaks down the centre and the ref missed a blatant trip on him at one point. Miss Deighton showed us why she is the third highest scorer in the Hull girl’s team; she has a “wicked” wrist shot.
Period 3, Bradford started with change of goal keeper, new keeper Mr Cosimini. 1 ½ minutes in saw Bradford on the power play as Grimsby got pulled for tripping. Leigh saw the opportunity and completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal. 4-0 to Bradford. A minute later saw Bradford short handed as Butler got his second penalty, interference again. Bradford held again and Coach Fletcher was able to still field 3 lines as Bradford had managed to obtain a 4-goal cushion. Mr Baldwin had brought his own fan club with him; whenever he took to the ice the rink rats could be seen and heard salivating over the banister. Great to have vocal support it really lifts the team.
Good “digging out” work by Mr Waterhouse this period trapped on the boards he was able to keep possession for Bradford on at least two occasions.
37 minutes into the game saw Alex pulled for a check to the head and that was game over for him 2+10. A minute later saw Jacko pulled for charging and he ended up sat in the box with best mate Al.
Bradford were once again defending 5 on 3 and some good defensive work from both D and forwards backed up by some pressure saves and excellent back checking from play maker Johnson saw Bradford survive unscathed.
The flying tent finally managed to turn all his hard work into a goal 41 mins into the game with a good single-handed effort. This saw Bradford in a commanding 5-0 lead. Exactly 2 minutes later the testosterone-fuelled tent did it again with a top corner shot. 6-0 to Bradford. Grimsby down, but not out came back at Bradford and within 10 seconds Culingford with assists from Smith and Watt had put Grimsby on the scoreboard. This was followed by an amazing display of goal celebration. (I think he should get out more.)
With the score at 6-1 and seven seconds left Mr Muff was dragged into a roughing altercation with Grimsby’s Mr short, having received a blatant punch to the face. However, following orders from the bench he left it at that and got just the 2 mins for roughing, without the 25 mins match penalty.
The final Bradford penalty came with just 1 second to go. Jonathon Harding, having had a good game, got called for a check to the head and paid the penalty 10+2.
The hooter went final score Bradford 6 Grimsby 1.
A good win for Bradford against a Grimsby side that just couldn’t find the net. Their team captained by Holly Cornford were much better than the score line suggested with decent defence and some amazing breaks from their defensive zone. During the first period when our defence managed to hold them at our blue line they managed to get away plenty of blue line shots for our goalie to deal with.
A good game to watch, well refereed with good audience participation.
Well done both teams, coaches and fans.
Bradford Man of the Match Matt Leeming.
