U18 GRIMSBY V BRADFORD

Yet another trip to Grimsby, that Motorway is so long, flat and boring.
Not to be said of this Grimsby game.

Grimsby 2  Bradford 10 Smile

In all my trips to the Grimsby rink I have never seen a Bradford team win so convincingly on the small ice. (Was it Charlie’s pre-game training?)
Prior to the game it looked as though Bradford would be unable to field a team, the largest squad in the club and about as much commitment as a senior side. However, after much begging and doubling up on transport we went with the bare minimum with three players strictly Ill, all of who performed equal to their best I hasten to add.

The game started and it looked as though it was going to be the usual, a close nip and tuck hard physical game. No room or time for our usual dipsy doodle stick handling and structured breakouts we are used to seeing from the U18's, the cream of Bradford's sides. However just over 11 minutes into the game “Chav Boy” Armitage, playing incapacitated from a recent migraine, took a sweet pass from Mr Ashington and Scored Bradford’s first of the game. Seven minutes later and an assist from said Chav Boy put Willis on the score sheet, luckily the ref hadn’t seen a previous incident where Mr Nelsons glove had accidentally dropped to the Ice in preparation for a “Huddersfield handshake”.
Bradford’s defence played well and the two lines rotated with everybody who turned up getting more Ice time then an Eskimo on a fishing holiday. Forty seconds before the end of the first period after an amazing performance by the Grimsby Octopus in goal. Where, from the bench, the puck appeared to have gone in the goal three times. Mr Butler was able to let rip from a Ashington / Armitage assist and net Bradford’s short handed third and last goal of the period. Bradford 3 Grimsby 0

Twenty three seconds into the second period saw Bradford on the power play and according to the games sheet Bradford’s backup goalie Alex Osmond, assisted by Mr Armitage, put Bradford’s Fourth goal into the back of the net. (Claims for goal please, Chris it couldn’t have been you. Even you can’t score and assist yourself.)
Grimsby kept their heads up and carried on playing hard, but good defensive and goalie work from Bradford’s lines paid off. Bradford’s strength game from quickly clearing our zone and fast and hard fore checking in their zone by our forwards, some thing the team and I had previously discussed while Mr Hanson was on Holiday.
It was nearly 10 minutes before Bradford scored again, an excellent solo effort by Bradford’s own “Where’s my Glove” Nelson.
Another five minutes and Bradford were on the score sheet again courtesy of Mr Ashington assisted by Mr Armo.
With a minute on the clock for the second period new boy Tomlinson, with a pass from Mr Dukes, netted his first League goal ever. Bradford’s jubilation was only equalled by Grimsby’s well-behaved fans desperation. Period end Bradford 7 Grimsby 0.
Last period and more of the same, fast rotating Bradford lines, good fore-checking, solid defence and excellent keeping saw Bradford keep their lead and after 4 minutes Bradford’s Captain, Jordan Ashington, scored his second goal of the game. Exactly 1 minute later Bradford’s “pocket rocket” Alex Laville scored his first goal of the game from an Ashington assist. He must of enjoyed it because he scored another exactly a minute later assisted by that Dukes kid. With less than 10 minutes to go and a high sticking penalty on Mr Cowley, no stranger to the penalty box today, saw Bradford short handed. A Grimsby shot from their Mr Neary, took a viscous deflection from the diffuse muscle rippled torso of Mr Butler and managed to beat the up to now impeccable keeper Parker. Grimsby had broken their duck, Bradford were down but not out. With 8 minutes left of the game Bradford’s Mr Laville having suffered his second blatant clipping incident in as many minutes reacted as Grimsby hoped he would, this left Bradford without his services for the rest of the game. Two minutes to go and Bradford on an elbows penalty short handed allowed Grimsby another consolation goal a Bugg conversion from a Robinson assist.
Hooter.
Final score Grimsby 2 Bradford 10

Well done Gents, Man Of The Match to Alex Laville and a possible smile on Old Misery Hanson’s face or was it the reflection of the Sun of the chrome on Grimsby’s Zamboni?

A good team performance, a good win. The drive home seemed much shorter than the journey out.
